The M&P Trikam story
The first thread of this textile journey started in 1913 where a young boy seeking a better life left his home in Gujrat, India.
Departing through the Bombay port now fondly known as Mumbai - he began his expedition to Durban, South Africa.
Originating from an upbringing and family of tailors, Trikam grasped the skill of tailoring at a very young age where he would carefully tailor and adjust simple items just as trousers and suit jackets. His devotion and passion of tailoring slowly developed into an adoration for high-quality fabrics –
as this curiosity grew Trikam made it his life work to seek out the highest quality of fabrics.
Not long after, Trikam found himself in the United Kingdom – during the time of the industrial revolution - seeking out woolen and suiting suppliers that would fulfill this dire need for quality to bring back to SA. To his success, his mission was complete as he established relationships with the best suppliers in the UK. Armed with an arsenal of great quality fabrics and knowledge, Trikam was able to open his first retail store in 1935 in Market Street which stored and sold woolen fabrics.
He called this store M&P Trikam which he ran with his two sons, Manilal and Parshotam with little knowledge of how this brand would later grow into generations.
After 30 years of growth on Market Street – Trikam and his family decided to move the store into the area of Fordsburg, where you will still find it today. Keeping in tradition of generational growth, Trikam’s grandson Prakash was brought into the business and with him brought new innovation and product expansions.
Prakash followed fondly in his Grandfather’s shoes, traveling the globe in pursuit of the finest thread counts of multi-purpose fabrics such as polyester and suit lining. Which Prakash enthusiastically brought into the South African market at a competitive price – This led to M&P Trikam’s rapid growth.
After many years of triumphs and innovation within the fabric industry – Prakash introduced his two sons into the business. A new generation of minds brought in to modernise this long - standing family business. Teachings from each generation have been passed down to the next which became the key thread to sustaining the synergy and tradition that is M&P Trikam.
To this day you will find a warm family welcome when you enter our fabric store – As if you are part of the family too.
